My Reflections on Multilingualism Material in the Academic Speaking Course

In sessions 11-13 of the Academic Speaking course, we discussed Multilingualism, particularly in the context of language learning and teaching. In this material, we were tasked with conducting an interview with an English language educator. The interview was done in groups, where my group and I prepared 5-6 questions related to multilingualism, such as how they define multilingualism, whether they are multilingual, the benefits of being multilingual in daily life and the workplace, challenges faced as multilingual individuals, and how multilingualism impacts language learning and teaching.

I will also provide a brief explanation about what multilingualism is and its role in language learning.

Multilingualism refers to the ability of an individual to use more than one language with a certain level of proficiency. In the context of language education, multilingualism offers numerous benefits, such as enhancing cognitive skills, providing access to a wider range of knowledge, and supporting cross-cultural communication. For instance, a multilingual person can better understand cultural differences, which is a valuable asset in today’s globalized world. Moreover, learning a second or third language often strengthens proficiency in the first language. However, multilingualism also comes with challenges, such as maintaining balance in language use and the potential for language interference.

For this assignment, we were also required to create a video reflection on our experience as English Education students studying and, in some cases, practicing multilingualism. This reflection includes questions like whether I am multilingual, how my experience has shaped me, the benefits and challenges I have encountered, and how multilingualism helps in language learning and communication.

After studying this material, I found the assignment to be very interesting, as it helped me gain a deeper understanding of multilingualism, both from my own perspective and through the insights shared by the educators. Moreover, the interview process allowed me to explore others' opinions, broadening my perspective on the importance of multilingualism in both everyday life and education.
