My Reflections After Studying AI (Artificial Intelligence) in ELT in the Academic Speaking Course
In the 3rd to 6th meetings of the Academic Speaking course, we explored the role of AI, particularly in teaching and learning processes. For this topic, we were tasked with interviewing a source anonymously, either a student or an educator in the field of English. The interview was conducted in groups, where my group and I prepared 5-6 questions for the interviewee. These questions covered topics such as their understanding of AI, how often they use AI in teaching or learning, their opinion on the best AI tools, and the advantages and disadvantages of AI in English language teaching.
Before delving deeper, let me briefly explain what AI is and its role in English language learning. AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to technology that mimics human intelligence to perform tasks like problem-solving, decision-making, and learning. In English Language Teaching (ELT), AI significantly enhances teaching and learning by offering tools such as chatbots and language learning apps that provide personalized learning experiences. It also helps educators by automating tasks like grading and material creation, allowing them to focus on engaging with students. Its primary function is to make learning more efficient, accessible, and tailored to individual needs.
For this course, I was also required to create a reflection video on AI's role in my experience as an English education student. In the video, I shared how frequently I use AI, what tasks I use AI for, and my thoughts on its strengths and weaknesses in educational contexts.
Reflecting on this material, I found the tasks both engaging and insightful. The interview activity, for example, helped me develop communication skills by learning how to ask meaningful questions and gain perspectives from others about AI. Additionally, it made me more aware of how I use AI in my own learning journey and how it can be utilized effectively. While AI offers many advantages, such as efficiency and accessibility, it also requires critical thinking to address its limitations, such as dependency or potential inaccuracies. Overall, this experience deepened my understanding of AI's potential and encouraged me to use it more thoughtfully in my studies.
